@papaburger He may not have? known how to implement what he wanted but make no mistake it was his vision that Apple was implementing. He drove many of the features in Apple products and pushed the engineers to come with solutions to his requests that they didn't believe they could make. It's ridiculous how heavily involved he was in all aspects of development unlike most CEO's who really are just businessmen. Being a visionary doesn't require he be a good engineer (and vice versa)

Unbelievable. how steve'd? even given such a huge influence in my life, an ordinary people from indonesia. not from his genius invention of ipod, iphone or ipad, but from his commencement speech in Stanford 2008. I was failed on an exam at that time, and i found his commencement video on youtube, it was literally like someone? pulled me up when im drowning. im not exaggerating. because of his speech, (i even listen to it till now) i become enlighted in so many ways. @papaburger Steve was the one who thought up most of this shit and told his engineers to design what he'd thought up in his head, which they did. But a lot of the ideas were his. Take the iPad for example... he saw the MS tablets with the stylus and thought they were shit, so told his engineers to build him one without a stylus and to put the keyboard? on screen using multi-touch. It took 'em about 6 months, but they did it, and the iPhone was the first product launch w/ that design.

All? these guys did was take existing technology and apply it to consumer goods, patent 'the application' and move manufacturing to China. They simply saw the opportunity to capitalise on something before others, that's all. You can be certain that we'd still have these devices if Jobs or Dyson were never born.

PCs rightfully rule the world and to this day you cannot buy a Mac which competes in terms of performance or reliablity at the? same price point, and at server level forget it. What he did is tap into a section of the buying public which is less technically savvy but more impressed by image and aesthethics (i.e. shallow). He brought us appealingly packaged chinese made products which would have appeared anyway, and hurt people.

@FooMilk The problem is like you said not the amount of money they get. The cheap labour in China is fueling their economy and peoples living standards are rising. The problem is actually the working conditions. Since it's a dictatorship, there is no free association. So basically they can't form unions to improve their conditions in the factories... the only legal union in China is actively opposing strikes.? Something is obviously wrong when Apples factory has to build nets to prevent suicides.

If anything, companies like Dell and HP packed the highest-end processors and video cards with their computers so they had a field on which to compete with Apple. Intel never stopped producing amazing? CPUs just because Apple didn't buy them. In fact, they won Apple over by innovating their technology. Without Apple's competition, other companies would arguably slack off even more.

The idea of a "personal" computer marketed towards the average user was pioneered by Jobs. Maybe he wasn't the only one, but he obviously did it the best. Jobs contracted with media companies and convinced them to sell their songs at 99 cents a pop and showed how profitable this could be to them. This stopped? media companies from being desperate and trying to sue-away companies like Napster. All-in-one means all components in one. He designed the first touch-based app-driven smartphone.

Go buy other crap if you want customization. Install Linux on your PC! I think there's more to a? computer than the ability to customize it. Steve has not done enough if barely any innovation of purely technical value to ever make up? for how his business philosophy has held the entire industry back. I would not be surprised if we would be alot farther along the line now without steves last decade of influence, on a pure hardware level.

@beaulieu4008 wont happen with an iPad for two reasons. A. It would have to be jailbroken in order to lock the tech down to the point where a school would deem it safe for children. B. If a book is lost or broken, its $20 for a new one, if an iPad is lost or broken,? its $400. C. It would be more cost efficient and less tech intensive to use a cheaper Android based tablet as using it as ePaper is hardly intensive work.

There is no good reason why the FOSS community should be defending a corporate CEO like Steve Jobs. FOSS? is itself evidence that the community can do better than Jobs' proprietary model. This community's deference to Jobs is the effect of decades of corporate propaganda, and it's being spouted by people who really should know better.
